New stadium still on the agenda, says Everton chief executive

Chief executive of Everton Robert Elstone has said that the club remains committed to its plans for a new stadium in Kirkby.

Speaking during an online debate organised by the Liverpool Daily Post, he claimed that moving away from the club's current home at Goodison Park is crucial from a football finance perspective.

"We need a new stadium. At the moment Goodison constrains our ability to generate money," Elstone commented.

He also said that Everton are confident they would be able to fill the new ground, which is expected to have a capacity of just over 50,000.

"We know that it will take a lot of hard work - but historically when clubs move they do see a significant uplift in attendances," said Mr Elstone, who joined Everton as deputy chief executive in 2005.

The fact that the new stadium will be located outside the Liverpool city boundaries has meant that the prospect of a move to Kirkby has proved unpopular with many Everton football fans.
