The National Football Museum could soon move from Deepdale to a new home in central Manchester, it has emerged.

Although the museum at Preston North End's stadium is currently visited by more than 100,000 football fans each year, trustees have said that funding the attraction has "always been a concern" in its current location.

According to the Guardian, talks to move the museum to new premises within the Urbis exhibition centre in Manchester early next year have now reached an "advanced stage".

However, the local authority in Preston remains hopeful that the attraction will stay in Lancashire.

"The National Football Museum is an important attraction for Preston and we desperately want it to stay in the city," council leader Ken Hudson said.

"We have an urgent meeting with museum representatives on Monday (September 14th), when we will discuss the future of the museum."

Launched in 2001, the National Football Museum includes exhibits such as the match ball from the 1966 FIFA World Cup final and the oldest FA Cup trophy.
