Russian football fans set to enjoy Welsh hospitality

Football Supporters News

Football fans travelling from Russia will be offered free shots of whisky by a local brewery when they arrive in Wales for this week's FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

The Russian supporters association recently urged fans heading to the game in Cardiff on Wednesday (September 9th) to drink whisky "as a form of disinfection" from the swine flu virus, Wales on Sunday reports.

Having heard of their advice, the Penderyn Distillery in Rhondda has decided to offer visiting football fans the chance to sample their products free of charge.

Stephen Davies, managing director of the only whisky manufacturer in Wales, told the newspaper: "We wouldn't ever claim any medical benefits for our products.

"But we are happy to let any Russians fans - or, indeed, any Welsh fans - come down to the distillery and try some of our whisky for free."

Wales will be without Jason Koumas for the match against Russia at the Millenium Stadium, as the Wigan Athletic midfielder announced his retirement from international football at the weekend.
