Ferguson: More technology could help referees

Sir Alex Ferguson believes that the recent alleged diving incident involving Arsenal striker Eduardo offers the perfect incentive for the introduction of more technology in football.

The Manchester United manager was in the crowd for Arsenal's victory over Celtic in the UEFA Champions League qualifying round, where accusations have been made that the Croatian striker dived to win his team a penalty.

UEFA president Michel Platini has suggested introducing extra assistants to man the goalline, although changes of any kind to support referees would be beneficial, according to Ferguson.

He said: "Whatever the debate it should lead to something more positive in terms of helping referees in situations like Wednesday night.

"There is no question that the speed of the game means technology or additional assistance should be used. For the last decade there has just been talk. Nothing has been done."

Meanwhile, UEFA has decided to charge Eduardo with diving in the game, a decision which could lead to the striker gaining a two-game European ban.

If this is implemented he would miss the trip to Standard Liege on September 16th and Arsenal's home game with Olympiakos on September 29th.
