Players' consortium would turn Newcastle into 'fans' club'

Former professional footballer Graham Roberts has revealed that, should the consortium he is leading succeed in taking over Newcastle United, a new system of fan ownership could be introduced.

Despite Newcastle's managing director Derek Llambias having questioned whether the Fanbase 410 Group will be able to acquire the finance necessary to complete a takeover, Roberts laid out his plans in an interview with BBC Newcastle.

Citing the example of Barcelona, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Rangers player explained that such a system would give supporters greater involvement in the day-to-day running of the north-east club.

"They can buy a share, they can pick the chairman, they can pick the manager, they can run the club," he said.

"You're listening and hearing things, and people say 'we can run the club better', well this is their chance."

Meanwhile, current Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is now expected to make an announcement on the future of the club on Monday amid mounting speculation that he is poised to sell up to north-east business tycoon Barry Moat in a deal worth £100 million.
