Ipswich Town to name stadium stand after Sir Bobby Robson

Ipswich Town are to rename the North Stand of their Portman Road stadium after Sir Bobby Robson, it has been confirmed.

Sir Bobby, who died at the end of July, managed the East Anglia side for 13 years, prompting calls for the club to establish a permanent memorial to him.

As such, following a poll of supporters, it has been announced that the North Stand will be re-named the Sir Bobby Robson Stand at a ceremony before the kick-off of Ipswich's home match against Newcastle United on September 26th.

Club chief executive Simon Clegg explained: "With the North Stand being seen as the heart of the club and of the fan base, the fans feel this is the right stand to be renamed."

He added that Sir Bobby's widow, Lady Elsie, approves of the gesture, particularly since the renaming will take place against Newcastle, one of his former employers as well as his home-town club.

This news comes soon after it was announced that written tributes left to Sir Bobby from fans and from leaders of the football industry are to be collected and stored at Newcastle's Discovery Museum.
