Leicester City stadium in Olympic running

Leicester City's Walkers Stadium is the latest to be mooted as a hosting venue for football matches at the 2012 Olympic Games, the Leicester Mercury reports.

A space became vacant earlier this week when Aston Villa's ground Villa Park was ruled out as a venue due to ongoing construction work.

Villa Park was set to host eight qualifying matches over four days during the Olympics, with the withdrawal giving other grounds the chance to prove their worth.

Leicester has also declared an interest in being a hosting venue should England be successful in its bid to stage the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Former player Steve Walsh told the publication: "Having Olympic football matches here would be a great thing.

"We're looking to get the World Cup in 2018, we've just had the Special Olympics here, so this would be something else that would be good for the city and the people."

Leicester City moved into the Walkers Stadium in 2002 after previously playing at Filbert Street since 1891.
