Nicklas Bendtner is offering to pay for all Arsenal fans who had his name and number recently printed on their replica kits to get a new shirt after deciding to change his squad number.

Since arriving at Arsenal, the Danish striker has worn the number 26 shirt, with many fans choosing to have this printed on their own personal kits.

However, he has decided that a move to the number 52 could provide him with a change of luck and has chosen to dig into his own pockets for the sake of supporters.

He told Arsenal's official website: "I chose to move to 52 because it’s a special number to me personally and I hope that it brings me good luck for the new season.

"I appreciate that a good number of fans have bought their kits for 2009/10 already with names and numbers printed up, so I'd like to personally cover the cost of replacing anyone's shirt that has my previous number."

Former Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg also made a kind gesture to fans on his last appearance for the club on the final day of the 2007/08 season.

Mellberg paid for 3,200 club shirts and gave one to each of the supporters who had travelled to London to watch the game against West Ham United at Upton Park.

Printed on each shirt was the phrase: 'Mellberg 4 - Thanks For Your Support.'
