Tension levels of football fans at Blackburn Rovers were higher last season than at any other club in the English Premier League, research has indicated.
Psychologist Dr David Lewis measured the heart beats per minute of supporters at all of the league's 20 clubs over the course of the 2008/09 season, alongside levels of cortisol, which is a stress hormone.
Results discovered that despite Blackburn Rovers finishing 15th in the league and only scoring 40 goals, the average club supporter had an excitement score of 189.
This was far superior to the 157 at bottom club Newcastle United, although it was supporters of Manchester United that had the highest heart rates for longer periods after games.
Dr Lewis said: "Blackburn Rovers fans are willing their team out of the mid-table comfort zone causing tension levels to increase more than fans of top clubs, who expect their team to win and are therefore calmer."
Excitement was definitely high at Ewood Park when Blackburn Rovers lifted the English Premier League title at the end of the 1994/95 season.
