Football sponsorship revenues down in English Premier League

The amount English Premier League clubs currently gain from football sponsorship deals is significantly less than two years ago, according to a new report.

It is stated that some £65 million a year is received at present by the league's 20 clubs, which is £10 million less than the peak of 2007, the Times reports.

Meanwhile, six clubs account for £53 million of this figure, showing how little certain clubs manage to make through their football sponsorship deals.

The study was produced by sponsorship consultancy BrandRapport and the firm's Nigel Currie said according to the publication: "The popularity of Premier League football across 220 countries means that local sponsors have been substituted by global brands, who want worldwide exposure.

"They pay big money for the top names, but they want three or four-year deals and not the uncertainty that goes with the smaller teams, who could be facing relegation."

Manchester United currently make £14 million each year through their deal with AIG and this will increase to £20 million next year when a new agreement with Aon begins.

At the other end of the scale, Portsmouth have signed up to the cheapest deal worth only £250,000 over three years with a local online recruitment agency.

Manchester United have won the English Premier League for the past three years and in 11 of the 17 seasons that it has been competed for.
