UEFA worried about Premier League club football finances

The financial difficulties being experienced by of some of England's most famous clubs has attracted the attention of UEFA, it has been revealed.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, UEFA general secretary David Taylor said European football's governing body had become increasingly worried about some of the news stories emanating from England, particularly ones which involve clubs in the Premier League.

Pointing out that there are currently a number of clubs "effectively on the market" after their values had plummeted, Taylor said he was fearful that another big side could "do a Leeds United" and risk their future by overextending themselves chasing short-term success.

Asked on whether he thought the Leeds United story would be repeated given the global economic turmoil, Taylor told the BBC: "In this current economic environment, I would never say never to anything like that.

"Clearly we do not see that as imminent but the concern is that we have to establish a stronger financial basis on which clubs can compete."

Leeds United currently find themselves in the third tier of English football but are favourites for promotion from League One this season, with Norwich City and MK Dons joint-second favourites.
