Tranmere Rovers owner shocked by eBay ad

Tranmere Rovers owner Peter Johnson has described his shock at recently waking up to find that the club had been listed on eBay for $10 million.

It is believed that Dornoch Capital, the US company faced with the role of trying to find a new buyer for the League One outfit, were responsible for the decision.

Among the facts placed on the online auction site to try to encourage prospective buyers were the football sponsorship opportunities that could create revenue growth, the potential for promotion up the football ladder and the lack of debt the club currently has.

Johnson said: "You can imagine how shocked we were to wake up this morning to find out we were on eBay.

"It's totally inappropriate. We immediately e-mailed them and said 'take it off right away'. It's not a second-hand bike we're selling."

The Metropolitan Borough of Wirral has been the club's chief football sponsor since 1989.

John Barnes was officially unveiled as the club's new manager last month, with former Liverpool teammate Jason McAteer taking on the role of assistant.
