Plans for a new football stadium that would be used by Scarborough Town have been cancelled following their rejection by a government body, reports the Scarborough Evening News.
The 1,200-capacity floodlit stadium was proposed to be built at George Pindar College, but Sport England has commented that the move could significantly restrict the use of the playing fields on the site.
Thus, discussions on the matter have now been withdrawn from an upcoming meeting involving the college and Scarborough Council's planning committee.
The college has now arranged a meeting with Sport England to re-submit plans and discuss the matter further later this month.
Hugh Bellamy, the headteacher at George Pindar Community Sports College, told the publication: "Sport England has never visited the site.
"We have discussed the issue with them and they are coming to see it on July 31st. We believe we should get a positive outcome once they have seen it. We hope to re-present our plans in August."
Scarborough Football Club had to be wound up in 2007 after they were discovered to be unable to pay debts that mounted to about £2.5 million.
Previously they were one of the oldest football clubs in England after being formed in 1879.
