ITV prioritises UEFA Champions League over Coronation Street

Football broadcaster ITV is to make changes to its schedule to air games from the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evenings, it has been revealed.

ITV1 is to show the live football matches from not only the European club competition, but also the FA Cup and England's internationals on Wednesday nights from July 23rd.

This decision will mean that Coronation Street will be moved out of its prime-time slot to 8:30pm on Thursdays, breaking a tradition that has lasted for almost 50 years.

The shake-up to the viewing schedule comes as a result of ITV winning the rights to the UEFA Champions League until 2012, with the competition kicking-off in August.

A spokesman for the channel said: "Coronation Street will make a move from Wednesday to Thursday nights to reflect ITV's contracts for the Champions League, FA Cup and England internationals, which will see ITV1's live football broadcast on Wednesday evenings."

ITV won the rights last year to broadcast the first pick of the Wednesday evening fixtures, alongside airing the final and the UEFA Super Cup final.

BSkyB is to show the first choice live game on a Tuesday and the remainder of the Wednesday night fixtures.
