Pele calls for FIFA to introduce salary cap

Football Finance News

Despite the fact that football has undergone many changes since his era, such as the addition of major football sponsorship deals, Pele believes that a salary cap should still be introduced into the game.

The Brazilian legend has revealed his concern over the number of billionaires moving into football ownership and the impact it could have in the future.

Thus, he has urged FIFA to step in and introduce a maximum wage to ensure that the game is not tainted for future generations.

He said: "My time was a little different – we did not have the big sponsors. Today they have big sponsors, big companies to support football.

"But in my point of view and the point of view of FIFA, these [players' salaries] must be controlled."

He announced his point of view while in Nigeria promoting Brazil's bid for the 2016 Olympic Games and the news comes on the back of the recent big spending of Real Madrid.

As well as breaking the transfer world record by paying Manchester United £80 million for Cristiano Ronaldo, Los Galacticos have also splashed out to bring in Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol during the close season.

Pele scored 77 goals in 91 appearances for the Brazilian national team between 1957 and 1971.
