Football Leagues/ Association and Governance
Planned reserve football could be scrapped in the Scottish Premier League next season if a new ruling is introduced to cut costs, it has been revealed.
The Daily Record reports that the league's governing body is set to meet later this month for its AGM, with money-saving initiatives among the things up for discussion.
With many of the league's clubs set to have to cut their squads next season as a result of the financial problems impacting upon the division, there are plans to make reserve games optional.
This approach has already been used in the past by both Celtic and Rangers and is being seen in a positive light by other clubs, who are attracted by the prospect of arranging a fixture on their own terms
The publication also suggests that clubs are unhappy that players cannot be picked for the first team because of bans picked up while playing in the reserves.
Celtic won the Scottish Premier League reserve league last season after beating Dundee United 4-0 on the final day of the season.
