Arsenal chairman suggests Premier League salary cap

Football Finance News

A salary cap should be considered in the English Premier League as a way of making the division more competitive, according to Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

Speaking to the Guardian, Gazidis revealed that he thought a more regulated system could also help clubs become more financially stable and potentially turn over a profit.

He told the publication: "I think it is worth our while to investigate whether there are elements of the salary cap system, which they have in US NFL and baseball, which would benefit football.

"Clubs have a duty to provide more stability in our business models and some form of wage restraint is one element worth looking at. There are many different ways in which it could work."

Gazidis added that he expects average wage sums to increase in the future, which will further challenge clubs to make a profit.

Manchester City are among the latest clubs threatening to take weekly wages to new levels after reportedly offering Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o around £180,000 a week to make the move to England.

Mark Hughes' club already have the top earner in the league, shelling out £160,000 a week to pay Robinho after the Brazilian signed from Real Madrid last summer.
