FIFA World Cup final stadium can compete with the world

Africa's soon-to-be largest football stadium will be able to complete with some of the other great grounds around the world, it has been suggested.

The 94,000-seater Soccer City Stadium is scheduled to be completed later this year at a cost of around £227 million.

Among the highlights of the stadium is that it is coloured orange and brown, while a ring of lights help to illuminate its base to give the impression of a fire burning a cooking pot.

Project manager Rod Pearce believes that the stadium set to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup final has the capabilities to match those currently regarded as the world's best.

He said: "I think it proves that we as South Africans, and Africans, can compete with the world's best in terms of what can be done here.

"There is no reason for us to think we cannot match what every other country in the world can do. This is clearly one of the world's most outstanding stadiums and will be a lasting legacy for generations of South Africa's World Cup."

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth was recently revealed as the first newly-built stadium to have been completed ahead of next year's FIFA World Cup.
