German football attendances continue to rise

Football Supporters News

Despite the recession, growing numbers of football supporters continued to flock to games in German football last season, it has been revealed.

According to the DFL, the German FA, during the 2008/09 season there was an attendance increase across German professional football for the eighth successive year.

It has been discovered that across the German Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 last season, some 17,580,821 fans turned up at football stadiums to watch games.

An average of 41,904 supporters arrived to watch the 306 fixtures in the Bundesliga last season, which may have been aided by the division having the lowest ticket prices across the major European leagues.

Christian Muller, DFL chief financial officer, said: "We are proud to register that German professional football attracts the highest spectator figures across the globe.

"Obviously, a balanced and exciting Bundesliga is at the heart of our success. If you add state-of-the-art, safe stadiums and the lowest admission prices of all European top leagues, you begin to know just what is keeping fans happy."

VfL Wolfsburg claimed their first ever German title by beating Bayern Munich to the crown last season.
