Melrose consortium reaches Stockport County agreement

An agreement has been reached by the administrators of Stockport County and a consortium run by Jim Melrose to sell the club.

The League One club entered administration in April as they struggled to clear their debts, with accountancy firm Leonard Curtis named as the administrator charged to find a buyer.

As part of a short-term fix to try and reduce the club's expenditure, the firm decided to make manager Jim Gannon redundant.

However, a deal has now been struck with the Melrose consortium, which is fronted by former Leicester City and Manchester City striker Melrose, to take over at the head of the club.

A spokesperson for the consortium revealed that they are now looking forward to entering discussions with rugby union outfit Sale Sharks, who are the landlords of Stockport County's Edgeley Park ground.

"We look forward to developing a fruitful relationship with Sale Sharks and Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, which will provide the basis for a successful future for Stockport County," the spokesperson indicated.

The Gibbons family seemed initially set to buy the club but financial complications caused their bid to fall through last week.
