Newcastle United's financial problems are set to worsen following their relegation from the English Premier League as it has emerged that some of their biggest stars are to receive a reward bonus for last season's efforts.

Despite, falling into the Championship six weeks ago, owner Mike Ashley is set to have to pay £10 million in previously agreed bonuses, reports the Daily Mail.

Senior figures Mark Viduka and Michael Owen are set to profit from annual loyalty payments of around £400,000 despite leaving the club on free transfers, while other stars signed to annual pay rises, as the club decided it had no reason to plan for a possible relegation.

The likes of Brazilian defender Cacapa and Joey Barton are thought to be others due to receive some kind of bonus as part of their contracts.

Some clubs such as West Bromwich Albion draw pay cuts into their players' contracts should the team get relegated.

Newcastle United's relegation to the Championship was sealed on the final day of last season when they lost against Aston Villa.
