Clubs should benefit from football broadcast contingency plan

Contingency plans should be introduced to prevent clubs from losing out on valuable money as a result of failed broadcasting deals, it has been suggested.

Luton Town managing director Gary Sweet fears that the club could end up £120,000 worse off as a consequence of the television revenue they could lose if Setanta fails to sort out its current financial situation.

And Sweet believes that clubs should be protected financially from the sums of money they could lose through this and similar future broadcast issues.

He told BBC Three Counties Radio: "I'm disappointed no contingencies have been made with so much money around in the game.

"Clearly as a high profile club in the conference this season we were hoping to be shown quite a few times. Burton Albion were shown six times this season, which probably took them up to about £110,000 to £120,000."

Sweet added that much of the expected money has already been spent by a number of clubs as they look to sign their wanted targets in the transfer market ahead of the competition.

All Football League clubs took a huge financial hit back in 2002 when ITV Digital collapsed.
