Plymouth Argyle manager states Championship wage cut may be needed

A number of footballers plying their trade at clubs including Newcastle United and Crystal Palace next season may have to reduce their salaries, it has been stated.

Plymouth Argyle manager Paul Sturrock has predicted that the move will benefit clubs in the Championship as the teams look to tackle the financial climate, the BBC reports.

He believes that the number of players at lower league clubs already being released as finances tighten is proof that some of the Championship's stars may have to lower their wage demands.

According to the publication, Sturrock said: "Wages will have to go down and hopefully that'll benefit clubs.

"The players who have been getting paid unbelievable wages are going to have to cut their cloth."

Sturrock also recently revealed that much of this season's bankroll will come from sales within his current squad and that may mean losing the team's best players if the price is right.

Earlier this year, Plymouth Argyle renewed its football sponsorship deal with snack-food company Ginsters for a further two years, meaning it will now expire at the end of the 2010/11 campaign.
