FCO warns Manchester United supporters about Rome safety

The 30,000 Manchester United supporters expected to make the trip to Rome for the Champions League final against Barcelona have been told to avoid the area's biggest tourist locations.

It is believed that the supporters could be targeted by gangs and so have been advised to avoid climbing on the metro to the Piazzale Flaminio, while also keeping clear of the Campo dei Fiori square, where trouble has been witnessed in recent years.

With some 10,000 fans expected to make the trip without tickets, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is concerned about the safety of these supporters.

Alastair Mackie, sports liaison officer at the FCO, said: "It is important to make suitable preparations before travel.

"We have been working closely with the Italian authorities and the British Embassy in Rome to ensure that fans have support in Rome and access to all the information they need to ensure a safe trip."

Manchester United qualified for the Champions League final with a 4-1 aggregate win over Arsenal in the semi-finals, while Barcelona saw off Chelsea on away goals.
