The lengths that some football fans travel to support their club has been praised by the chairman of Nantwich Town, the Crewe Chronicle reports.

Despite the Northern Premier side recently losing 2-1 in the league's play-off final against Ilkeston Town after extra time, chairman Clive Jackson has highlighted the impact of the fans who travelled to Derbyshire.

He told the publication: "We have seen our fan base grow from 70-80 to 700-800. They turn out in force week in, week out and they travel in great numbers away from home.

"We really, really appreciate them. I want to say a big thank you to them - they are very important to us."

Barratt Homes is currently in a three-year deal to be the football sponsors on the club's home shirts for all games, although the club are still looking for an away shirt sponsor.

One of Nantwich Town's main claims to fame is being the first team to host Liverpool in the FA Cup, with the Merseyside club going on to win 4-0 in 1892.
