Dunfermline fans have signed a petition suggesting clubs should have the choice of whether to have standing areas at their grounds.

The move to all-seater stadiums was made following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, now 20 years on a petition has been signed in Scotland looking to see a return to standing areas in stadiums.

Supporters at Scottish Premier League (SPL) outfit Dunfermline wish for fans to be allowed to stand on terraces again with 2,314 signatures being gained by the petition, which is to encourage a look at a potential rule change.

The petition has suggested that professional clubs should be given the option of providing both seating and 'safe standing areas' at their home grounds, giving fans a choice of where they would prefer to watch the game from.

It is hoped by the club that the change will be implemented if they win promotion to the SPL from the first division, with the current regulations stating that all clubs in the SPL have to have an all-seater stadium.

Stephen Taylor, of the Pars Supporters Trust, which has started the petition, said: "[A] major reason for bringing back standing areas is the clear contribution it makes to the atmosphere at games.

"There is no doubt that allowing supporters to stand does help the level of vocal support and it is easier to keep warm when watching a game in the depths of winter."
