Swine flu could cause Scottish football cancelation

Fans of teams in Scotland with everything still to play for as the season reaches its climax have been told that the ongoing swine flu situation could lead to the remaining games being abandoned.

The Daily Record has revealed that government officials are contemplating a "blanket ban on large gatherings of people" should the World Health Organisation (WHO) raise the red alert level of the disease to six.

This may mean that the upcoming Scottish Cup final between Rangers and Falkirk is cancelled, while there are only five rounds of fixtures remaining in the Scottish Premier League (SPL).

A source at the publication said: "If this develops into a pandemic then it is only natural football and every other sport will suffer.

"Similar plans were drawn up years ago at the time of the Foot and Mouth crisis and they have been put in place again."

Currently, the WHO has declared that the swine flu situation is a level five problem, although this could change at any moment.

Celtic sit one point clear of Rangers at the top of the SPL with five games remaining and this weekend Celtic travel to Aberdeen, while Rangers entertain Hearts.
