Fifa rules will prevent Old Firm joining Premier League

With plans highlighting the possibility that the Old Firm could play in a new-look English Premier League, Fifa will prevent any such move being put into existence, it has been stated.

According to ex-Fifa vice president David Will, the governing body's rules will prevent any such change taking place.

Will confirmed Article 80 of Fifa's constitution means that a club cannot go to play in a league in a different country unless in 'exceptional circumstances'.

He said: "In my experience, Fifa have never given it. Once there was an application by a Spanish team from Los Angeles, who wanted to play in the Mexican league. That was refused.

"If they did that, it would be the thin end of the wedge. You would have the big Belgian clubs trying to get in the Dutch league, the Dutch ones trying to get in the Bundesliga."

The proposals have been suggested by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside, who in June will put forward to the Premier League his plan for two top divisions of 18 teams in England, including Celtic and Rangers.

Both sides are currently battling it out at the top of the SPL with Hearts in third spot 19 points behind second-placed Rangers.
