Southampton have little over a week to go before they have to fold for good unless they can find a new buyer, it has been revealed.
According to the Guardian, a source at the Championship club believes that they will be able to play their final league game of the season at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
However, they may be forced to close two days later unless one of the consortiums currently considering making an offer chooses to do so promptly.
If Southampton are saved, they will be playing in League One next season under a ten point penalty, following their holding company Southampton Leisure Holdings going into administration.
Meanwhile, the club could end up in further financial turmoil as they could potentially be fined by the Football Association following a pitch invasion in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Burnley.
Mark Fry, the club's joint administrator, said: "As for the pitch invasion, I'm not condoning it, but after the announcement on Thursday, emotions were running high.
"I just hope they don't punish us for that as well because the club have to find a buyer and any further threat will not help us to do that."
David McGoldrick is Southampton's top league goalscorer this season with 12 goals.
