Racist abuse could lead to matches being abandoned

Games could go on for longer than 90 minutes or even be abandoned if racist abuse of players is witnessed from the crowd at football matches in the future, new plans have revealed.

Uefa president Michel Platini has come up with the idea after Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli was targeted by Juventus fans at the weekend.

Because of the situation, Juventus will now have to play their next home game, which is against Lecce on May 3rd, behind closed doors.

However, rather than play a league game without any fans in attendance, Platini has thought up another solution if the problem persists in the coming months.

He said: "We will call for play to be stopped for ten minutes when these things happen and for announcements to be made in the stadium.

"If it continues, then the match will be stopped. Courage is needed when there is racism in the stands."

Balotelli scored the opening goal in Saturday's game, but the match finished 1-1 after Juventus defender Zdenek Grygera equalised in the last minute.
