Fifa to enter talks with Solomon Islands over beach soccer boom

Football Leagues/ Association and Governance

World football's governing body Fifa is to send representatives to the Solomon Islands to discuss the development of beach soccer in the Oceania region.

According to the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), this version of the game has taken off across the nation over the past few years to become more popular than both the traditional game and futsal.

As such, officials are keen to come up with a plan with the game's authorities that will allow the Solomon Islands to take part in the upcoming Oceania Beach Soccer World Cup qualifiers in Tahiti.

"Last year a beach soccer committee was set up in Honiara and he [Fifa official Patrick Jacquemet] is here to map out beach soccer development plans for the Solomon Islands," SIFF general secretary Eddie Ngava told Star Sports.

"The soccer code is gaining popularity in the Provinces and beach soccer can be developed faster in this country compared to the other two codes of soccer," he added.

To date, Brazil have won the Beach Soccer World Cup on three occasions since it came under the control of Fifa, with France taking the 2005 title.
