Wigan ground to have a new name

Football Clubs News

Wigan Athletic have announced that as of the beginning of next season their ground will have a new name.

After ten years of being known as the JJB Stadium, the ground will be called the DW Stadium as of August 1st.

The news comes after chairman of the English Premier League club Dave Whelan announced the launch of his new venture – DW Sports Fitness.com.

His new company has bought the nationwide chain of fitness clubs from his former company JJB Sports, while also taking over the naming rights to the stadium.

Mr Whelan said: "The JJB Stadium has made the town of Wigan known all over the world and we can now look forward to a whole new era as the DW Stadium."

Wigan are currently managed by Steve Bruce and he has steered them to seventh spot in the Premier League table with eight league matches still remaining.

A Ben Watson goal six minutes from time gave them a 1-0 home win over Hull in their most recent league game.
