Tottenham revealed today (March 19th) that they made a record pre-tax profit of £39.8 million in the six months to the end of 2008, aided by some notable player sales.

Last summer, the north London side made over £51 million from the sales of strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

In addition, the departures of Pascal Chimbonda, Steed Malbranque, Teemu Tainio, Paul Robinson, Younes Kaboul and Anthony Gardner all contributed to the final total.

Chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement: "During the 2008 summer transfer window gains were made on the sales of a number of registrations."

However, in a thinly-veiled reference to the sales of top stars Keane and Berbatov, Levy added that the sales were not conducted in a manner "that was planned or welcomed".

The figures are likely to be balanced out by a number of January transfer window recruits, notably the capture of Wilson Palacios and the re-signings of Jermain Defoe, Keane and Chimbonda.

Darren Bent is Spurs' record signing, having arrived from Charlton Athletic for £16.5 million in June 2007.
