Uefa 'open' to European Super League

Football Leagues/ Association and Governance

Uefa is open to the possibility of replacing the Champions League and Uefa Cup with a new continental 'European Super League', France Football reported yesterday (March 17th).

According to the newspaper, the European Club Association (ECA) held talks in Nyon, Switzerland last week about a potential three-tiered competition.

In an assessment echoed by Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport, the competition would see each division feature between 20 and 22 teams, with promotion and relegation in operation.

Uefa president Michel Platini told France Football: "Everybody knows my philosophy about European competitions...but the world is changing and we must be careful about that.

"If (clubs) come and talk to us, we would listen to them and then decide."

However, Platini added that his preference would be to revert to the traditional European Cup knockout format, with sides playing home and away legs.

Spanish side Real Madrid have enjoyed the greatest success in European club football's flagship tournament, lifting the trophy on nine occasions.
