Football in Germany is still thriving despite the ongoing effects of the economic downturn, according to new figures released yesterday (March 12th).
The German Football League (DFL) conducted a study which found that the 36 clubs in the country's top two tiers recorded a combined turnover of 1.93 billion (£1.78 billion) last season.
That figure represents a 10.7 per cent increase from the total for the 2006-07 season - with 81 per cent coming from Bundesliga clubs - and is also the fourth consecutive record-breaking year.
The DFL also noted that clubs' post-tax earnings were 24.7 million, while equity increased by 16.7 per cent to 505.3 million and the state took 665.5 million in taxes.
In addition, the report found that the football industry at large in Germany now employs a total of 37,684 people, a figure which is an increase of 8.2 per cent from the previous campaign.
Hertha BSC are the Bundesliga leaders at present, sitting four points clear of nearest challengers and fellow surprise package 1899 Hoffenheim.
