Jets chairman fury at Asian Champions League sponsorship rules

Football Sponsors/ Sponsorship and Media

Newcastle Jets have responded angrily to being ordered to remove their sponsor's logo from their shirts for the duration of their Asian Champions League campaign.

The A-League side kicked off in the tournament last night without displaying Centrebet's company design on their strips, the Sydney Morning Herald reports today (March 11th).

Despite losing the home fixture 2-0 against Chinese side Beijing Guoan, Jets chairman Con Constantine was more concerned with slamming the "hypocrisy" of the Asian Football Confederation.

He told the newspaper: "I didn't want to say anything or create any problems, but they're our major sponsor and we can't look after them. It's very disappointing that nobody until three weeks ago told us.

"I reckon if Centrebet was there on our shirts and we did well in Asia, that could have been worth A$200,000 (£94,000) to A$300,000."

Constantine added that the decision represents a "big contradiction" as Centrebet could have been marketed very successfully in Asia as "Asians are the biggest gamblers in the world".

The Jets play at the 26,164-seater EnergyAustralia Stadium.
