Beckham to buy MLS franchise

Football Referees, Players, Managers and Media

England star David Beckham is planning to buy a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise when his playing career finally comes to an end, the BBC revealed yesterday (March 9th).

The former Manchester United man, who is currently on loan at Milan from LA Galaxy, has long been thought to have such a clause in his mega-bucks contract with the American side.

Its existence has now seemingly been confirmed for the first time, with Beckham - whose deal expires in 2011 - likely to be provided with a major financial partner by the MLS for the move.

He told the news provider: "I have the right to own an MLS franchise, which I will action immediately after I have stopped playing."

Beckham has often discussed wanting to make a long-lasting mark on the US and he added that he still intends "to develop soccer in the United States, which is something I am passionate about".

It was announced recently that Beckham dug into to his own pockets to help extend his loan deal with the Serie A giants until the end of the current season.
