SPL to appoint new chief executive

The Scottish Premier League (SPL) has confirmed today (February 27th) that it is set to appoint a new chief executive, BBC Scotland reports.

Current chairman Lex Gold, 68, has held the post for the past ten years but is reportedly ready to step into a new non-executive role at Scottish football's governing body.

An SPL spokesman confirmed that an appointment will be made before the start of the 2009-10 campaign but did not disclose whether anyone has been approached at this stage.

He told the news provider: "This is a priority. Getting someone in place by the start of next season is a more realistic timeframe."

Some reports have suggested that Scottish Football League (SFL) chief executive David Longmuir would be a natural choice to fill the role, but he denied that the SPL has made any contact with him.

"I am completely wrapped up in the SFL," he told BBC Scotland.

"We have a cup final coming up and I am not thinking about anything else. My sole focus is on the SFL."

The SPL is currently looking into the possibility of creating a second top-flight tier, which would be known as SPL2.
