Darlington fall into administration

Darlington have been forced to enter administration and will be docked ten league points, it was confirmed today (February 25th).

The Quakers, who will move down from seventh to 12th in League Two as a result of the penalty, have been placed in the hands of Dave Clark from Brackenbury Clark and Co.

Chairman George Houghton, who took over from Stuart Morris in March 2006, expressed his dismay at the news but emphasised that he is remaining positive over the future of the club.

He said in a club statement: "This is a sad day in the long history of Darlington Football Club. It was a result of a combination of circumstances compounded by the current economic recession.

"By appointing administrators at this time when the team is playing well, the club's management costs have been brought under control and the council is aware of the detailed planning case, I hope I have given the best possible opportunity to deliver the club into new ownership."

Clark also explained that the club has a "number of advantages" which should make it attractive to potential investors, such as the 25,500-seater Darlington Arena and a "strong" team and playing staff.

Local planning regulations regarding the standard of access roads mean that the Quakers have to cap attendances at 10,000, although their average gate tends to be between 3,000 and 4,000.
