Platini eyes spending cap

Uefa president Michel Platini has indicated that he will consider capping clubs' expenditure on transfers and wages, it was revealed today (February 18th).

The 53-year-old former France international suggested that European football's governing body has been asked to assess the situation by the clubs themselves.

In a thinly-veiled reference to Manchester City's reported £90 million pursuit of Brazilian superstar Kaka, he explained that one club's "astronomical bids" were "morally" questionable.

Platini said: "Clubs are telling us that our system is in danger of financially imploding in the medium term. We are looking at limiting a club's expenditure on staff.

"That limit would be salary and transfer fees combined - to an as yet undecided percentage of its direct and indirect sporting revenue."

The ex-Juventus star also called on the European parliament to throw its weight behind any Uefa proposal, despite the chance that this would contravene free trade laws.

City allegedly offered Kaka in the region of £250,000 per week in order to tempt him to Eastlands.
