IFAB to consider sin bin proposals

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) will consider proposals to introduce sin-bins for yellow card offences later this month, it was revealed on Tuesday (February 10th).

The suggestion, which was made by the Irish Football Association, will be discussed when the law-making board convenes for its annual meeting in Belfast on February 28th.

For the plan to be enshrined in the rules of the game, a 75 per cent majority is required from the board, which comprises the four British associations and four Fifa representatives.

Irish FA president Raymond Kennedy told Reuters: "We are still looking into the details of how it would work but the basic idea is if someone gets a card from the referee they would be sent to a sin-bin for say five or ten minutes as in rugby."

Kennedy added that one of the major benefits of the move would be cutting down the amount of paperwork and disciplinary meetings necessitated by the current yellow and red card system.

The sin-bin policy has been operating in northern hemisphere rugby since January 2000.
