Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate revealed in a recent newspaper interview that the club is currently in debt to the tune of £85 million.

After 25 games of the 2008-09 Premier League season, Boro are second from bottom in the table, only ahead of West Bromwich Albion on goal difference and staring relegation in the face.

Speaking to the Sun, Southgate said that it is his team's precarious position in the league and not the worrying financial situation that currently concerns him.

"I'm thinking about getting our team out and getting the right level of performance from them," he said.

"We have a debt of £85million. We know the resources we have and we know the parameters and that makes life difficult."

The Middlesbrough manager stressed that he has a good relationship with chairman Steve Gibson and is willing to dedicate "every hour towards keeping this football club in the Premier League".

Southgate took over the top job at Middlesbrough from Steve McClaren in June 2006.
