SuperSport takes over GTV's African broadcast rights

A broadcaster which shows Premier League matches in Africa but went into liquidation last week has been saved by South African firm SuperSport, it was confirmed today (February 4th).

Gateway Broadcast Services supplied coverage of English top-flight matches under the banner of GTV in a number of African countries, such as Kenya and Botswana.

Despite its tens of thousands of members, the company revealed that it had reached a perilous situation as a result of the ongoing effects of the global economic downturn.

The news was followed by a mass switch-off of its programming but now SuperSport will take over the rights for the remainder of the fixtures this season and the whole of next season.

Chief executive Imtiaz Patel said: "We are pleased that Barclays Premier League supporters on the continent will continue to enjoy the best of the league.

"We are delighted to have Package A matches in the SuperSport fold. We'll continue to deliver the very best in sports broadcasting."

The company also confirmed that the live coverage will be back up and running this weekend on channels belonging to the DSTV satellite broadcaster.

Egypt won the Africa Cup of Nations last year for a record sixth time.
