Al-Fayed calls for transfer and salary caps

Fulham owner Mohammed Al-Fayed has expressed his belief that transfer and salary caps should be introduced in English football in light of Kaka's proposed transfer to Manchester City, the BBC reports.

Mega-rich City are courting the Brazilian star and are apparently prepared to offer him £500,000 per week after reports claimed that Milan will accept their astonishing £108 million bid.

But Al-Fayed, who once paid around £11 million for French flop Steve Marlet, has described the situation as "madness" and asked for the Football Association and Premier League to step in.

He told Radio Five Live's Sportsweek: "It's bad news for football because it's crazy. All this is still in the hands of the Premier League and the FA.

"They have the power not to allow things like this to happen and I hope they wake up and realise it's not acceptable. They can put a cap on transfer fees and salaries."

Al-Fayed added that clubs bringing players through their academies is far more of an "art" than attempting to spend in excess of £100 million on one player.

The Harrods owner bought Fulham in the summer of 1997.
