Bannsiders fans dig deep to contribute to striker fund

Football Supporters News

Coleraine fans have been dipping into their own pockets in an attempt to generate additional funds for manager Davy Platt's transfer kitty, the Coleraine Times reported yesterday (January 13th).

The Northern Irish side are the best-supported team outside the Belfast 'Big Two' of Glentoran and Linfield but are currently struggling in fifth place in the IFA Premiership.

However, Willie Gardiner, who has supported the Bannsiders for 50 years, decided to make a collection during Saturday's home win over Dungannon Swifts to help raise £1,650 for the club.

He told the newspaper: "I was thinking as a long-time supporter I should maybe try something to help the club bring in some new players."

Mr Gardiner added that the response of the fans was "fantastic" and that he hopes the money will be put towards the signing of a new striker.

Coleraine are the only Irish League club to have won two successive all-Ireland competitions, having lifted the Blaxnit Cup in 1969 and 1970.
