Oxford United have been handed a five-point deduction after fielding an unregistered player, it was confirmed yesterday (January 12th).
The Blue Square Premier side received the punishment after selecting midfielder Eddie Hutchinson, who has been with the club since 2006 but was not properly registered this season.
In addition to the points penalty - which leaves the Us 14 points adrift of the play-off positions - a fine of £500 was also administered for the error.
Chairman Kelvin Thomas told BBC Oxford: "We're obviously very disappointed in the panel's decision - we presented our case and I think we were given a fair hearing.
"The decision is something that disappoints us. We will consider an appeal. We'll wait to get all the information from the hearing before we rush to judgement."
The mistake was discovered in November after 26-year-old Hutchinson, who arrived at the Kassam from Brentford, had scored two goals in 19 games, worth 11 points to the Us.
They now have 14 days (from yesterday) to consider whether they want to make an appeal.
Oxford United famously won the League Cup in 1986, defeating Queens Park Rangers 3-0 in the final.
