A senior Premier League spokesman has praised top-flight clubs for taking the initiative and reducing ticket prices for their fans, the Times reports today (January 12th).
As the credit crunch continues to hit fans in the pocket, West Ham have commenced a 'kids for a quid' deal and Fulham are selling packages for two adults and two children at a price of £50.
Now Dan Johnson, senior spokesman for the Premier League, has explained that the clubs are making a decent fist of keeping attendances up to the levels recorded last season.
He told the newspaper: "Clubs have done pretty well to keep figures as buoyant as they have been.
"So far, total attendances are less than a percentage point off last year and clubs have been doing everything they could to make sure fans are still coming through the doors."
However, the extent of the problems can be seen by the fact that tickets for Manchester United games at Old Trafford have been going on general sale in recent weeks.
Only Bolton, Manchester City, Fulham, Chelsea and Middlesbrough have seen their average attendances rise so far this season, according to the Times.
