The new head of the Great Britain Olympic team has claimed today (January 9th) that it should enter both men's and women's football sides at the London Games in 2012, the BBC reports.

Andy Hunt, who was recently appointed as the chief executive of the British Olympic Association, will attempt to bring the four GB national associations together in talks this spring.

Although the task will not be an easy one - only England are fully committed to the move - Hunt has explained that he believe the British people would love to see a GB team in London.

He told the news provider: "I'm sure the British people really want to see a unified team in the 2012 Olympics.

"Football is the important sport in this country and British involvement in the Olympic tournament would be incredibly exciting.

"The national football associations need to come together to resolve this matter for the British people."

Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland have all expressed their fears about the proposals as they feel it could threaten their status as individual football associations.

However, Fifa president Sepp Blatter announced recently that the world football governing body's executive committee would have no problem with a one-off GB team for 2012.
