Chelsea the paupers in surname stakes

Football Supporters News

New research released today (January 5th) has shown that, contrary to popular belief, Chelsea's squad is not packed with big-name players after all.

Virgin Money conducted a survey which found that the average surname length of the Blues' players is the shortest in the Premier League.

With a squad average of 5.67 letters, Chelsea fans can be expected to fork out £2.83 to have their favourite player's name emblazoned on their replica shirt, assuming each letter costs 50p.

Meanwhile, the list is topped by Blackburn (seven letters), while Manchester City star Shaun Wright-Phillips is the most expensive top-flight name with 15 characters (£7.50).

Grant Bather from Virgin Money said: "We now know who the real big names in the Premier League are and Chelsea are left trailing. Man City must be kicking themselves for the signing of Jo which has sent their average down.

"Parents with kids who are big Shaun Wright-Phillips fans must be hoping they'd turn to Jo as every little helps in the current economic climate and a £5.50 saving is not to be sniffed at."

Virgin Money's latest Football Fans Inflation Index revealed recently that the cost of a match day on average is now £106.21.
