Going to football matches helps to strengthen family ties

Attending football matches is the best way to bridge generational gaps and allow various family members to bond, according to new Football Fans Census research.

The group conducted a study of nearly 3,000 adults ahead of last weekend's FA Cup third-round matches, commissioned by energy giant E.ON, the tournament sponsor.

The results showed that a resounding 77 per cent of parents believe that a football ground is the ideal place to strengthen their relationship with their kids - a view shared by 83 per cent of those who are grandparents.

Sports psychology expert Martin Perry commented: "Supporting the same football team is an excellent way to bring families together - both in triumph and defeat. It creates bonds that hold for years; talking points; and a focus for family activity.

"Spectator sports like football can play a huge role in strengthening family ties, values and promoting harmony amongst family members."

Furthermore, the study showed that for 44 per cent of respondents, going to a football match was the only opportunity for families to fully get together outside of Christmas, Easter and other significant events.

E.ON confirmed recently that it intends to give away free family ticket packages for FA Cup matches all the way to the final at Wembley in May.
